Automated Tax Refund Notification – Scam Warning
Many UK home workers will be sorting their tax records about now, so when I received this scam email, I thought it best to raise the profile.
This is not the usual scam that I talk about on these pages. Usually they are scams that try to make you believe you could be running a successful business by paying someone. This one is just simply trawling for your bank details and maybe infecting you with a virus. I have already received 3 copies of the same email in just 5 minutes, so it has a wide distribution.
It appears to be sent by HM Revenue & Customs (HMRC), but it is not. The same way as the link says that it is going to send you to the official website, but in fact it points to http://jcurrency.org/conf/en/main.conf.php. I’ve no idea what that website is, whether it is genuine and been hacked or a total fake.
You only need to try to read the email to see that it is not in good English, it’s full of spelling mistakes and the grammer & punctuation give it an air of being written by someone who does not speak English as a first language. It is totally unpersonalised (no reference by name, not even sent directly to your email address) and probably very dangerous should you follow any of the links. Avoid it!

If you get this email, just delete it. Under no circumstances click on any of the links in your email, it could end up costing you a fortune! If you think you are owed money, phone up the tax office and then delete the email.
If you are owed money by HMRC they will always contact you by mail, NEVER e-mail. It is the same as the purported ‘account suspension pending’ e-mails from various banks. Just keep marking them as phishing scams and eventually the ISP’s will delete them.
