Choosing Keywords

When you are promoting a white label website, selecting the actual items to work with is critical. Too many people fall into the trap of trying to promote the entire product base straight from the start. But when you are promoting a website selling mobile phones, jewellery, lingerie or whatever, there can be a lot of stock to choose from. If you pick a very general keyword to start working with, the likelihood is that many people are also working on that keyword and it will take a lot of effort to get it even into the top hundred pages on search engines.

Worse still, if you are trying to promote everything on the site at once, then the total workload needed to succeed would be huge and you are unlikely to see any progress from your efforts. After a few weeks or months, you will give up and try something new. Whereas for a focussed effort, you should have seen some results.

So instead of trying for every generic keyword under the sun for the entire catalogue of your chosen merchant, focus on a couple of items and picking selective keywords is more likely to bring successes.

This might not feel right. Giving ourselves the most opportunities for success feels better than concentrating efforts into one or two areas. Likewise, choosing keywords for these items that have lots of traffic feels safer than choosing keywords with a lot less traffic.

But it is essential at first to concentrate your efforts into a manageable amount of work. If you tackle the entire catalogue in one go, you will fail. Instead, choose a handful of mobile phones, a range of clothing or jewellery or however your supplier breaks down and look for keywords that relate to these. Also, don’t go straight for the high traffic keywords, these are almost certain to have far more competition. Instead, think carefully and research keywords that aren’t so obvious and maybe have reduced traffic. Because they need a bit of thinking and have less traffic, most people will have ignored them and there’s a chance to get your site well optimised for these keywords.

Once you have chosen your keywords then it is time to start promoting your website through the search engines. Changing the pages might not be a possibility, but you can still link build. And the best way is article writing. Yes, this means taking about an hour to write each one, which is why you need to concentrate your efforts. But it does result in quality inbound links without getting involved in reciprocal link building.
