Choosing a Niche Keyword

If you have decided that you would like to have a go at building and hopefully selling a Niche website, what exactly is involved?

Well, first you have to decide on what niche you will target. Obviously the project is going to be helped if you pick a niche that will earn you some money. Not only will this earn an income along the way, an income that can be used to drive a selling price, but if you fail to sell the website then you have at least got a stream of income coming in for all of your efforts.

So the first choice is what niche to use? Will it be one where there is plenty of choices in affiliate schemes to pick up some sales or completely away from all affiliate schemes?

The first choice seems the obvious. The more affiliate schemes there are the more likely you are to be able to be able to promote some products and earn a decent income. But, in this case there are probably loads of other people battling for a good position on the keywords, so making your job much harder, but likewise more rewarding when you get there.

So maybe pick something away from all affiliate schemes? Not easy, and not easy to turn an income to prove the value of the site. Some lateral thinking, such as related books from Amazon, might give an income. But it is not going to give a huge income and you aren’t going to see rewards so quickly. Maybe keep these for the niche specialists.

On balance, the middle ground is probably the best place to start. Find a niche that has some affiliate schemes to sign up to and add to that some cross selling and some lateral thinking. Pick something that you know about – a niche that is connected to a hobby, interest or work. Something that you will be able to write plenty about to get articles written for incoming links (far better than link directories).

For most subjects you will be able to benefit from schemes such as Google’s Adsense to earn more income. In fact, in my experience this can generate as much, if not more income, than the affiliate selling side unless there are loads of choice in the affiliate program. You can have the adverts displayed across all pages, not just the product pages, so they become a vital tool. And as your main aim is to show a high level of traffic and income on the site, put these adverts where they work best.

For your first venture at least, choose a niche that you stand a chance of easily getting to the top of the search engines. The income potential may be lower, but it will keep your spirits up and keep you inspired to keep on at it.
